Tier-on-Tier Shutters

Tier-on-tier gives you the most versatile shutter layout available. Two rows of panels are stacked with independent hinges, so you can open the top and bottom halves in any combination.

Tier-on-tier shutters with independently opening top and bottom panels on an Ipswich bay window

Best suited to

  • · Bay windows
  • · Bedrooms overlooking gardens
  • · Georgian sashes
  • · Large front-facing windows

How they operate

The lower tier can stay closed for privacy while the upper tier is opened wide, or vice versa. Louvres on each tier tilt independently.

Ideal for homeowners who

  • · Period homes
  • · Anyone who values maximum control

Advantages

  • · Total flexibility over privacy and light
  • · Works beautifully on tall period windows
  • · Suits homes where the view and privacy needs change through the day

Worth knowing

  • · Slightly higher price than a full-height equivalent because of the extra hardware
  • · Requires a window tall enough to divide cleanly in half

Common questions

Tier-on-Tier Shutters: common questions

Most louvred shutter styles can be specified with or without a mid-rail. On tall windows we usually recommend one for rigidity and split control; on smaller windows it is a purely aesthetic choice.
Common louvre sizes are 47mm, 63mm, 76mm and 89mm. Smaller louvres suit small windows and traditional properties; larger louvres let in more light and suit modern rooms. We recommend a size at survey.
Yes — we offer a wide range of standard whites and neutrals, popular stains for timber ranges, and colour-matching to a specific RAL reference on selected ranges. Samples are available before you order.
